London Calling is the third album by English punk rock band The Clash, released 14 December 1979, on CBS Records in the UK and in January 1980 on Epic Records in the United States. The album represented a change in The Clash’s musical style, and featured elements of ska, pop, soul, rockabilly and reggae music. The album’s subject matter included unemployment, racial conflict, drug use, and the responsibilities of adulthood.

The album received highly positive reviews and was ranked at number eight on Rolling Stone’ list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003.London Calling was a top ten album in the UK, and its lead single “London Calling” was a top twenty single.It has sold over two million copies worldwide,and was certified platinum in the United States.

After recording their 1978 album Give ‘Em Enough Rope in the United States, the band separated from their manager Bernard Rhodes.This separation meant that the band had to leave their rehearsal studio in Camden Town and find another location to compose their music. Drawing inspiration from rockabilly, ska, reggae and jazz,the band began work on the album during the summer of 1979. Tour manager Johnny Green had found the band a new place to rehearse called Vanilla Studios in Pimlico, which was located in the back of a garage.The band quickly wrote and recorded demos, with Jones composing and arranging much of the music and Strummer supplying the lyrics.

In August 1979, the band entered Wessex Studios to begin recording London Calling. The Clash asked Guy Stevens to produce the album, much to the dismay of CBS Records.Stevens had alcohol and drug problems and his production methods were unconventional.While recording he would often swing ladders and throw chairs around the band to create an emotional atmosphere.The entire album was recorded within a matter of weeks, with many songs recorded in one or two takes.

The album’s cover features a photograph of Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass against the stage at The Palladium in New York City on 21 September 1979 during the “Clash Take the Fifth” US tour.Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photograph to be used. She thought that it was too out of focus, but Strummer and graphic designer Ray Lowry thought it would make a good album cover.In 2002, Smith’s photograph was named the best rock and roll photograph of all time by Q magazine, commenting that “it captures the ultimate rock’n'roll moment – total loss of control”.

The cover artwork was designed by Lowry and was a homage to the design of Elvis Presley’s debut album.The cover was named the ninth best album cover of all time by Q magazine in 2001.

Racial jokes in todays youth good or bad you decide?

Alright… at schools everywhere kids are spreading numerous jokes about ethnicity social status and gender. Some say they are harmless, promote acceptance of differences but some believe that they are hurtful and inflict racial conflict. Good or bad you decide.

i dont think they present any good perceptions or values at all. I had this happen the other day a teen came up to me and for what ever reason (probably thinking i would think its funny or see how i would react) goes into these real racist black jokes and im just hurting inside. I told him they were NOT funny and the ppl who he heard these jokes from are insecure and possibly racist. (i say possibly because i wasn’t sure if they were children or adults). As it turns out they were other teen boys. perpetuating stereo types VIA jokes is just ignorant and we cannot move forward as human race without giving basic respect to one another. I explained it and i dont believe he will repeat the jokes. In a way im happy he did because i know my opinion will trump other teen boys opinions. So at least it presented an opportunity to talk with him about the subject of maturity and respect for one another.

5.The college educated people cant get high end or low end jobs. The non-college educated workers dont get jobs because job turnover plummets. A lot of employers start exploiting vulnerable workers. Sexual harassment increases. It becomes harder to leave jobs.
6.Violence crime rises. Robberies, murders, assaults
7.Upscale turns off. Some ex-Middle class workers start running scams. These are people who are too proud to scale down. Look for increase in ID theft.
8.The school system collapses. Police officers and fire fighters get laid out. Gangs take over neighbors.
9.Ethnic and racial groups turn on one another.
10. Extreme law enforcement policies

File 4 of 4. Smith’s one-woman show was broadcast on PBS’ American Playhouse in 1993. It’s sadly out of print for home use (libraries can contact Monterey Media), but here’s a copy of the show’s first half from a 15-year-old videotape recorded from TV. It tells the story of racial conflict in a Brooklyn neighborhood that resulted in one dead black boy and one dead Jewish man. Powerful stuff. Deavere is brilliant.

i am a conservative libertarian, and i do believe something needs to be done on the matter of illegal immigration. that is my only opinion on the matter, so i’m not going to pretend like i know what should be done.
i don’t want to offend anyone of any political ideology or ethnicity, but it seems like tensions are rising rapidly in the southwest region.
some of my state leaders (mo), pretty much copied and pasted the arizona law and are going to try to pass it soon.
i have not read the immigration reform bill of az., so personally i have no opinion of it as of yet. but this is not really a question about the bill, but do you think something like this may happen with the tension rising like this?

things like this have happened before. like the Plan of San Diego (please research it if you have not heard of it). that was no major conflict though.

i know it is early, but do you think compromise and reason will ensue and these tensions will die down a little bit, or will it get worse from this point on?

when critisizing an opposing ideology, please don’t judge to harshly and don’t attack each other please.

if you have read the immigration reform bill in arizona, what do you think of it?

Even with the hurriedly scribbled changes to the law, don’t be fooled. This measure requires civilian police to ferret out those in the country illegally, setting up a state where proof of citizenship is required at all times for those who look, speak or act as if they have a family tree with roots in Mexico, Central America, South America, Cuba or even Spain.

White Canadians skirting the immigration law have little or nothing to fret. But it still means that if you’re in a car pulled over for having a tail light out, and children or anyone else inside the car cannot prove they are U.S. citizens, the law requires that they be confiscated by police and jailed. Clearly, those police with level heads won’t regularly be dragging Hispanic children out of cars, but there isn’t a scrap of doubt that there will be plenty of police doing just that.

The intent of the law is as clear today as it was when it was first signed. State officials believe they have created legislation allowing civilian police to round up illegal immigrants and scare away others as well as future prospects, and they’re willing to step all over the rights of every Hispanic citizen in the state to do it.

Right after the new law came out a couple of unrelated guys took out ads in Craigslist basically declaring "open season" on raping, robbing and beating illegals — since they will now be too afraid to go to the law for protection.

So you can see if you think about it that the new law can leave openings for huge civil rights violations.

On St. Patricks day, I often go to parades with my dad, who is irish, I’m half black and irish. Since I look black everyone at the parades look at me like i’m not supposed to be there.

Well, then they are small-minded people; and you’ll have to forgive them for their ignorance and small minded-ness..I am African-American, and dear, you’re going to have to learn to accept the reality of being a person of color living on this planet. Look at all the struggles African-Americans have gone through and are still going through. There has been a lot of pain and suffering. But always remember this: "Black is Beautiful", and you should be proud of who you are. Be proud to be a child of God, and be proud to be a descendant of some of the most strongest people on the planet–the African slaves. Dont walk around with you head bowed down–and dont apologize for being black & biracial. Those same people who are looking at you like that–will spend tons of money this summer to get your natural bronze skin-color, and will pay a plastic surgoen to get your lips and hips.
