Discovering Religion: Ep 1 – Ready-Made World

The first installment of my original series “Discovering Religion”. In this episode I discuss the apparent conflicts that exist with our present observable reality and our past archaic religious traditions that not only seem to contradict one another, but all that we have discovered through the scientific method.

Bad Religion – Resist Stance – Anaheim HOB 3/18/2010

Bad Religion playing a new song at House of Blues Anaheim on March 18, 2010.

Video is jerky from getting bumped in pit, audio is bad, but hey, a Palm Pre isn’t exactly professional equipment.

Lyrics:
Seeds of rebellion lay outside your front door
If you nourish them and water them they’ll grow into a healthy what for?
And if revolution isn’t what’s in store
How can you care anymore?

It’s a dangerous slip,
a conscientious shift
In the spirit of resistance you gotta hold your grip
Lest the state of your resolve makes you quickly devolve to a fundamentalist

You’re an archetype,
that they can pin to the wall
As you cling to all convictions like a farm animal in its stall
Never thinking of the bigger world outside
As they take you for a ride

It’s a dangerous slip,
a conscientious shift
In the spirit of resistance you gotta hold your grip
Because passion unabated will be readily conflated with belligerence

It’s a dangerous slip,
a conscientious shift
The spirit of resistance you gotta hold your grip
And the verdict won’t be kind ‘cuz they’re desperate for a viable alternative

Take a stance. The Resist stance.

Bad Religion – Resist Stance – San Diego HOB 3/19/2010

New song Resist Stance, sans Brett. Gotta love Greg’s epic finger point at the end as “I Want to Conquer the World” starts.

Sorry for the drunken toolbox to my left, flailing his arms.

Why do people get so defensive about people asking alternative questions about religion?

I was raised in church myself but I also consider myself to be a thinker. Why do people on Y!A and wherever get so protective and defensive when anyone asks a simple question that may involve theri religion?
Example: Me: Have you wondered if Jesus may have been just a prophet and not God incarnate?

Hard Core Christian: (sweating and screaming) Oh My God never, the Bible says it and you’re too prideful and you’re going to Hell, etc. etc.

Why can’t you even entertain any question just for the sake of thinking?

Thinking? Thinking?!!? If God has wanted us to think, He would have given us brains!!!!

Serious, some folks are so rectilinear in their thinking, they cannot even begin to imagine possibilities or alternate realities

My wife once floated the theory that Jesus was, in fact, several people, preaching the word of God and her brother nearly turned himself insdie out with apoplexy

Are you looking for some guidance/direction yet find religion to be too orthodox?

What are the alternatives to religion?

Religion is a way of life.
The religion a person is in defines the way of his life.

Without religion everyone will be reckless or careless. There will be nothing to guide a man. Only thing that does guide him will be his inner desires, his wants.
And without a proper guide, that is religion, a person’s desire will be boundless, which will, more often than not, lead him to commit something evil, harmful, etc…(which may be rightly considered inappropriate only thanks to the advent of the religion).

Qur’an:
Ch.02 V.216:
…it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

Do atheists think that religion is an acceptable alternative to valium, prozac, etc?

To me, doping people up with powerful mind state altering drugs, some with serious side effects, as opposed to merely feeding them lies and giving them the false hope of an eternal afterlife does make a reasonably convincing argument for religion, wouldn’t you agree?

I knew a lady on prozac and a lady on god. They acted exactly the same.

Are religious fundamentalists more likely to believe in "alternative" medicines than atheists?

Because both religion and "alternative medicines have no basis in evidence.

Fundamentalists tend not to question dogma or authority, and generally value tradition…thinking ‘outside the box’ is generally perceived as threatening…

So I’m gonna say no….

But you might find some food for thought from here
